Full Stack Engineering Manager for Growing StartupAbout Us

Aspect - a service for women’s metabolic health with an initial focus on PCOS, a syndrome that impacts 1 in 10 women in the US. Our investors include TechStars, EWOR, ex-CEO of Wired UK, and the co-founder of Flo Health (FemTech unicorn).

We’re growing very rapidly (doubled ARR in the last 2 months) and fostering a collaborative and professional environment where talented engineers thrive.

You will be working alongside a team of talented, passionate, and very hard-working professionals.

The Role:

In this hybrid role, you’ll devote half your time to leading and evolving our engineering team—driving processes, quality, and growth—while spending the other half developing and maintaining the codebase, ensuring technical excellence and timely delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain high-quality features across our mobile and backend systems.
  • Design, develop, and maintain APIs and backend systems using Node.js, Express.js, and TypeScript.
  • Implement and optimize frontend features for the mobile app using React Native.
  • Collaborate closely with designers, backend engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver seamless user experiences.
  • Implement database solutions using PostgreSQL and Mongoose.
  • Integrate with various third-party services and APIs.
  • Write clean, well-documented, and maintainable code.
  • Participate in code reviews, contribute to continuous process improvement, and uphold industry best practices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve bugs and performance issues.

Managerial & Leadership Responsibilities (50%)

In this half of the role, you’ll lead our engineering team through robust processes, ensure high-quality deliverables, and foster continuous improvement—driving growth, collaboration, and accountability across the organization.

  • Team Leadership & GrowthDirectly manage and mentor a small, growing engineering team, fostering accountability and professional development.
  • Recruit, onboard, and scale the team as we grow, ensuring a supportive yet high-performance environment.
  • Engineering Process & CoordinationCoordinate the engineering team’s participation in agile ceremonies in partnership with Product and QA.
  • Drive accurate estimations (time, resources) and set realistic delivery goals.
  • Oversee the team’s workflow in Jira, maintaining transparency on progress, blockers, and velocity.
  • Engineering Process MaturityEstablish and enforce coding standards, pull-request guidelines, and code coverage targets.
  • Implement structured release cycles (e.g., code-freeze, release readiness checks) with staging environments for thorough testing.
  • Advocate for TDD or strong test coverage and integrate metrics into user stories.
  • Bug Triage & Tech Debt ManagementDefine a priority/severity framework for bugs, ensuring clear repro steps and acceptance criteria.
  • Maintain a dedicated tech-debt backlog, addressing refactoring needs alongside feature work.
  • Documentation & Knowledge SharingCreate lightweight but effective guidelines for documenting architecture, conventions, and deployment steps.
  • Promote team-wide knowledge sharing and clear onboarding docs for new hires.
  • Quality & DeliveryOwn the engineering side of on-time, on-scope delivery, removing blockers and refining processes.
  • Design and implement a robust testing framework, including a comprehensive staging environment for both manual and automated QA.
  • Collaborate with QA to uphold high-quality standards from sprint planning through production release.
  • Cross-Functional CollaborationWork closely with Product (CPO) to align technical solutions with business requirements and timelines.
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders (third-party integrations, contractors) as needed.
  • Advocate for clear, transparent communication across engineering, product, and broader teams.

Technical (Hands-On) Responsibilities (50%)

In this half of the role, you’ll be writing code as an engineer and be hands-on with the codebase, optimizing backend systems, guiding front-end best practices, and implementing monitoring solutions—maintaining a balance between speed, reliability, and scalability.

  • Backend EngineeringWrite and maintain production-quality code in Node.js, Express.js, TypeScript.
  • Maintain and optimize PostgreSQL (using Knex or similar) and Mongoose for data handling.
  • Manage real-time features using Socket.IO and handle basic DevOps tasks on Google Cloud or similar.
  • Full-Stack OversightProvide technical guidance on React Native, reviewing code and advising on state management (e.g., Redux, Zustand).
  • Contribute to deployment flows (Expo, etc.) and performance tuning.
  • Monitoring & ObservabilityUse Amplitude for analytics and event tracking.
  • Integrate or enhance monitoring/logging tools like Datadog, Grafana to proactively detect and resolve issues.
  • Code Quality & ArchitectureEnforce best practices, code review standards, and documentation.
  • Balance rapid development with maintainable architectures and optimal performance.

Nice-to-Have: Agile/Lean Process Coaching

  • Enhance agile ceremonies while keeping startup agility intact—maintaining speed with fewer “quick and dirty” shortcuts.
  • Keep retrospectives action-oriented, ensuring continuous improvement is more than just talk.
