Job Description

Senior Backend / Cloud Web3 Engineer - Remote

Premia is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol specializing in trading options for cryptocurrency assets. It aims to provide a fully on-chain, trustless, and non-custodial platform for users to trade & earn. Premia offers a wide range of options products, including covered calls, cash-secured puts, and various multi-leg strategies, enabling users to hedge their positions, generate yield, or speculate on the future prices of digital assets. With a focus on user experience, liquidity, and capital efficiency, Premia strives to democratize options trading and bring institutional-grade derivatives products to the DeFi ecosystem.

We are a growing, globally distributed organization with opportunities for remote-first work. Despite being a relatively small team, we are one of the most impactful teams in crypto.

We’re seeking a passionate, self-motivated software engineer to help us build the next generation of decentralized financial products. As a key engineering team member, you will gain ownership and responsibility over building and maintaining our existing suite of backend systems and infrastructure, while contributing to our user-facing products. You will focus on delivering high-performance, highly resilient, scalable solutions that power our trading platforms, analytics, and more.

Who are you?

A senior-level full-stack/backend engineer (Cloud veteran) with a solid background in financial applications and relevant backend technologies (e.g. Typescript, NodeJS, Python, databases, cloud services, network infrastructure, etc.). You are familiar with decentralized applications on the Ethereum blockchain (or complementary Layer-2 networks) such as Premia and Uniswap, as well as centralized crypto applications such as Deribit and Coinbase, and understand the backend technologies and cloud services often used by these projects.

You are passionate about building highly scalable, resilient, and performant software systems for the next generation of financial applications on the internet and have a wide set of skills and experience to execute on this. You understand the necessity for building dependable, scalable, and developer-friendly systems in order to support realtime financial applications.

You have experience and are culturally aligned with fast-moving small teams. You have worked in a remote (globally distributed) team before, preferably in a startup environment. You are self-driven, highly knowledgeable about building performant, scalable Cloud services, and can swiftly ship high quality software systems when needed. You can identify company priorities, own them, and iterate quickly to ship the best solution within aggressive deadlines.

You understand the necessity of thoroughly testing financial applications and the systems thereof before and after shipping any service to production. You have experience utilizing testing suites, CI/CD, and issue tracking systems to effectively maintain resilient production software at scale.

You can write and speak highly fluent English and have great communication skills. You work well in a team.

The Role:

Engineers at Premia work directly with our Chief of Engineering and the existing engineering team to architect, develop, and optimize our backend systems and cloud infrastructure. You will also collaborate with the frontend team to integrate backend and cloud services into user-facing features and new iterations of the Premia applications and product set.

In addition, you will work closely with other departments such as Smart Contracts, Design, Operations, and Marketing teams to successfully plan, execute, and iterate on the implementation, testing, and deployment of new features and enhancements.

As a senior engineer, you will mentor other members of your team, and will make sure backend services and cloud components are shipped on time, performant, highly resilient, scalable to millions of users, and always running smoothly.

Responsibilities:

- Build highly available, scalable, fault-tolerant backend systems, with both serverless and cloud services.

- Design and implement software systems to ingest and supply complex on-chain data for fast, easy access.

- Design and architect backend REST and WebSocket APIs for scalable, realtime financial usage.

- Engineer large-scale data pipelines to drive insights into protocol performance and user behavior.

- Develop mission-critical bots or smart contracts that monitor blockchain state and user funds.

- Take advantage of best-in-class tooling to provide the highest quality services to our products.

- Collaborate with frontend team(s) to integrate backend services into realtime web3 applications.

- Write clean, well-documented code and participate in code reviews to prevent technical debt.

- Mentor other engineers and evangelize best practices in a highly collaborative environment.

Requirements:

- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in fintech or a related financial field

- 4+ years of software engineering experience in Typescript and NodeJS

- 4+ years of experience building scalable solutions on top of Cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure)

- 2+ years of software engineering experience in Solidity, Python, or Rust

- Exceptional proficiency in TypeScript, NodeJS, and relevant backend technologies (e.g. databases, cloud platforms)

- Understanding of Solidity, Python, Rust, and other backend programming languages

- Passion and experience for building complete software systems in production

- Experience working with containerized technologies such as Docker

- Familiarity with automated testing, DevOps best practices, CI/CD pipelines

- Strong fundamentals in computer science, software design patterns, networking, etc.

- Track record of delivering high-quality code with a focus on performance, security, and scalability

- Passion for DeFi, game theory, mechanism design, and other web3 concepts

- Outstanding problem-solving skills and intellectual curiosity tempered with humility

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to collaborate cross-functionally

- Self-starter with a desire to take ownership, learn new skills, and mentor others

Bonus Qualifications:

- Professional experience in the Ethereum/web3 ecosystem

- Knowledge of cryptography, zero-knowledge proofs, and other cutting-edge web3 technologies

- Open source software contributions, especially to major web3 projects

- 4+ years of university-level software engineering training and education

- 2+ years of hands-on experience with blockchain/web3 projects (including personal/hackathon)

Benefits

Work from anywhere (Remote-first), flexible working hours, flexible vacation policy, highly competitive compensation, ability to get paid in Crypto and earn startup allocation. You will join one of the most influential teams in web3 and have access to state-of-the-art engineering infrastructure. You will learn an enormous amount about the industry and earn highly valuable career experience.
