About the Opportunity
As a Software Engineering Manager, you will be managing a team of backend and machine learning engineers to build new products and services at the cutting edge of automation technology. You will be deeply understanding customer needs, supporting engineers in building right-sized solutions to drive customer value as quickly as possible, driving technical best practices on your team, and mentoring engineers to help them grow into the strongest versions of themselves.
You Will
- Lead a team of backend and machine learning engineers to design algorithmic solutions to database performance and cost optimization problems
- Partner with product to deeply understand customer needs and guide engineers to design right-sized solutions that delight customers
- Build a high-performing, fast moving engineering team working in cutting edge problem spaces
- Mentor engineers in technical, communication, and collaboration best practices
You Have
- Experience leading and motivating strong, productive, distributed teams
- Experience managing an engineering team that works on multiple products and technical stacks
- Ability to work in a fast-paced early stage startup
- Exceptional skills communicating and managing upward
- Skilled in mentoring engineers to work collaboratively with product to turn high-level business requirements into detailed technical designs and tasks
- Skilled in mentoring engineers to design scalable, resilient systems and architectures
- Skilled in guiding engineers to find technical solutions that balance speed and quality, and design services for fast iteration
- Proven track record of making improvements to team processes, technical best practices, and culture
- Skilled at proactively managing multiple simultaneous engineering efforts, assessing risk, and working with the team to come up with proactive mitigation plans
- Experience transforming culture on teams to one that is collaborative, growth-oriented, and high-ownership
- Passion for mentoring engineers on technical, communication, and collaboration skills
- Skilled at communicating effectively in a distributed environment with people across multiple time zones
- Strong self-motivation, initiative, and adaptability
Nice to Have
- Experience working with data warehouse products such as Snowflake or Big Query
- Experience developing a database product that is used by external customers
- Experience managing an ML team
- Experience implementing algorithms in customer-facing products
- Familiarity with Google Cloud
