Job Description

This position is with the  Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC) , a global network of communications professionals in the field of climate, energy and nature. GSCC is a programme hosted by the Meliore Foundation.

We're looking for a digital-savvy Senior Campaigner who is excited about using their talents in strategic communications to empower potentially game-changing partners to tackle one of the biggest issues of our time: the climate crisis.

We need a strategic thinker who can identify where climate action can be unleashed by empowering others - from individual voices to single organisations to whole sectors - on strategic communications and digital, and then proactively make that happen.

The successful candidate should be able to draw on a wide range of approaches - including co-campaigning, shadowing, training and granting - and expand the toolbox with innovative solutions where necessary.

A typical day in the job might involve understanding colleagues’ overall strat comms objectives and reflecting on whether a new model for partner empowerment could be the key to achieving them; pitching a long-term digital vision to a partner’s senior staff; supporting a partner to recruit a digital lead or hire digital agencies; upskilling a partner through training; or co-implementing a partner’s campaign to show them best practice.

The role will sit within the campaigns team of GSCC’s International Digital Hub (IDH) reporting to the IDH Digital Director, and will involve working closely with other campaigners and digital experts.

If this sounds like the right challenge for you, we'd love for you to apply.

How you'll contribute

  • Work closely with colleagues to develop a keen understanding of which strategic communications and digital gaps exist in the climate space that must be filled in order to achieve GSCC’s objectives;
  • Based on those gaps, lead the strategic development and implementation of the IDH’s empowerment program in order to build the necessary strat comms and digital knowledge and expertise among partners, activists, and other actors fighting on behalf of climate action at the regional, national, and international level;
  • Conduct and organise empowerment efforts with partners in various forms (such as co-campaigning, support writing long-term comms plans, trainings, recruitment, grants, etc), bringing in audience insights experts and digital specialists where appropriate;
  • Spread thought leadership within the IDH and network on empowerment best practices and where it fits into strategic campaigning, including by pooling existing expertise and experience within the network.
  • Advise colleagues planning their own empowerment projects on approaches they could take.
  • Drive GSCC’s internal digital capacity building program to contribute to the professional development of digital staff in line with network needs and digital best practice;
  • Measure and report on the success of the capacity building project, focusing on actual impact and avoiding vanity metrics;
  • Manage necessary budgets, compliance, internal communication, and administrative process development in order to execute the program effectively

Our ideal candidate has

  • Has extensive experience creating and implementing effective comms strategies - including by drawing on digital comms methods - to shift an audience and achieve an outcome, ideally in multiple regions around the world.
  • Thinks ambitiously, strategically and creatively about where partner empowerment can make the biggest impact on real-world outcomes, rather than narrowly focusing on routine training for its own sake.
  • Has a solid understanding of digital campaigning and where it fits into overall strat comms.
  • Is a talented networker who can bring external and internal stakeholders along with their strategic vision.
  • Is a solid project manager who can drive projects to completion efficiently.
  • Is proactive, outcomes-driven and has experience in starting and completing their own projects, bringing others on board where needed.
  • Deep knowledge of adult learning techniques and the technicalities of digital marketing is less important, but the candidate should be able to proactively draw on other experts.
  • Is fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Has the disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers.
  • Has the versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work across time zones using tools such as Zoom, Slack and email (Google Workspace).
  • Is committed to an inclusive and empowering approach to facing climate change.

Why join us?

  • Be part of a remote-first, international network of professionals working on climate, energy and nature. We offer coworking access in some locations.
    Work with a bunch of dynamic, culturally diverse individuals who combine their passion to make a difference with a rigorous and results-oriented approach to work.
  • Enjoy regular opportunities to connect and collaborate with colleagues around the world.
  • A full-time position with a consultant or employment contract (subject to location) for 12 months, with a possible renewal after one year.

Location:  flexibly remote

Only candidates with the right to work in their location will be considered.
