Software Engineer II, Web Recommendations

We are looking for a full stack engineer to join our established yet evolving Recommendations web team.

Together with other members of our squad, across engineering, product management, design, and analytics, you will contribute to meaningful streams of work that will build a world class experience when discovering what we have to offer on Etsy.com.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. 

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?

• The Web Recommendations team is focused on enhancing the user journey throughout the Etsy marketplace, focusing on creating high quality Discovery experiences. We work to reduce friction for our buyers, making sure they have an easy and inspiring experience throughout their buying journey.

• We also work to improve performance and architecture to pave the way for future product features.

• We are a cross-functional product development team consisting of engineers, product managers, designers, product marketers, data analysts and user researchers. We collaborate closely and learn via data, user interviews, experimentation and iteration so that we can take a holistic approach to improving the buyer experience.

What does the day-to-day look like?

• Be responsible for the design, development and implementation of highly maintainable and scalable systems by contributing at all levels of our web application stack

• Collaborate with teammates to independently tackle well-scoped problems, regularly deliver work to end users and be a primary contributor to team’s goals

• Contribute to and lead projects - such as enhancing the UX and data powering recommendations modules, and make it easier to build new features through product as well as technical investments

• Continuously learn from your teammates and share your own insights with them.

• Regularly push code to production using our continuous deployment systems.

• Create and update reusable components that are used by product teams across all of Etsy

• Run and iterate on experiments to learn the impact of the changes you work on

• Participate in code and design reviews to ensure high code quality.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• You have 2+ years of proven web development experience and are excited to grow along with the team.

• You have experience building web applications, using both back-end and front-end technologies (we use PHP, MySQL, TypeScript, JavaScript, and React)

• Any experience with Scala, Airflow, or basic understanding of ML algorithms and recommendation systems is a bonus.

• You are comfortable collaborating closely with product managers and designers, providing estimates or product ideas that will influence your team’s roadmap.

• You have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality, and are willing to work with and improve on code you did not originally write.

• You thrive when faced with customer and product-focused challenges and care as much about building great products as you do writing great code.

• You love to experiment and use both quantitative and qualitative methods to drive decision-making.

• You enjoy being a mentor and mentee.

• You take pride in owning work from ideation through completion.

• You are a mindful, transparent and thoughtful communicator.
