Playa Bowls is New Jersey's Original Acai Shop, and our mission is to bring superfruit bowls to the masses using only the freshest, highest quality ingredients while providing a fantastic in-store brand experience. What began as a pair of blenders, a patio table, and a fridge has flourished into a 300+ unit operator and franchisor of the leading fast casual restaurant concept. Playa Bowls added more than 70+ locations in 2024 and are on target to add as many 90 new locations in 2025. Who You Are

The Design Manager is a key member of the Development team, reporting directly to the Director of Design. This individual will be responsible for creating site designs for a consistent with the company’s brand standards, while adhering to cost, schedule, and operational requirements. This position manages 40-50 projects annually. The position manages consultants and coordinates with in-house Real Estate, Construction Managers, and Operations on the real estate development process.

General Description

  • Open to candidates within our national footprint near a major airport
  • Fully remote with the ability to travel up to 50% of the time

Responsibilities

  • Creates preliminary designs including test fit and schematic design (incl. RCP) that adhere to company brand and construction standards as well as developing site-specific design solutions that are consistent with prototype design intentions.
  • Review/Analyze due diligence information as the basis for developing preliminary site plan designs. Coordinate with architectural and engineering consultants to ensure construction documents are completed to Playa Bowls specifications.
  • Partner with Construction and Real Estate to successfully implement the store design. Assist in coordination for smooth turnover of all new shops and remodel projects to the operations and training teams.
  • Utilize the company's project management platform (FranConnect) to ensure that franchisees, A&E purveyors, FF&E vendors, and other cross-functional teams are aligned to support timely and cost-effective development.
  • Maintain all FF&E, millwork, and supplier installation schedules & supplier pricing
  • Maintain and coordinate updates for PB Prototypical Drawings, Design Manual and Specifications. Ensuring change management is communicated internally, and to vendors and franchisees
  • Creative ability to have vision for new and existing shops to create the ‘Playa Bowls Jersey Shore Vibe’

Experience, Education And Behaviors

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Urban Planning, Architecture, or related field
  • Minimum seven years of architectural and construction experience, in a retail/hospitality environment
  • Experience preparing and managing development projects, including specific plans, zoning code amendments, design standards, construction documents, and all necessary entitlements
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, InDesign, SketchUp and Photoshop
  • Proficient in Google Suite, FranConnect (Franchise Management Software), and Microsoft Office for collaboration and communication
  • Process-oriented with ability to execute within the parameters laid out by the senior development team.
  • Organized and good time management skills with ability to manage multiple tasks on a regular basis.
  • Strong financial orientation and understanding of what drives store success.
  • Creative problem solver, working through challenges with adaptability, resilience, and expertise
  • Can develop contingency plans to deal with unexpected situations in the development process
  • Able to prioritize duties and tasks with a sense of urgency
  • Recognizes emerging patterns, makes connections among data and issues, and appropriately reacts

Essential Physical Functions

  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Must be able to engage in problem-solving skills to help identify and solve potential issues
  • Must be on call to address delays, emergencies, bad weather, and other issues at the jobsite.
